The visual language of “Afikomen” is meant to reflect the inquisitive nature of our kid detective protagonist. The film was entirely shot on the Varotal/i lenses, often using zoom camera movements to highlight or reveal persons and objects of interest during decision points in this interactive film.
The film lives within the family holiday movie genre, somewhere between the aesthetics of Norman Rockwell and John Hughes. The warm characteristics and natural focus falloff helped towards emulating these influences, without any distracting lens breathing during our zooms whatsoever.
We shot entirely at an F/4, with deeper focus to situate our characters within the home which was carefully production design laden with references to the family’s history and prospective clues waiting to be found.
