DOP’s Perspective:

For Engal Thamizhe music video, I chose Sony FX6 with Cooke SP3 lenses for the interior set portions and Panasonic Lumix S5IIX with Lumix L-mount autofocus lenses for the exterior montages.

I’ve been using Sony FX series cinema cameras for most of my projects, but there aren’t many cinema lens options for the E-mount. PL-mount cinema lenses were outside my budget, and for indie projects like this, clients are not used to seeing larger lenses and usually don’t appreciate the extra time needed for lens changes.

So, when I was looking for alternatives to autofocus lenses, I tried the Cooke SP3 lenses and loved its natural color rendition, compact form factor, and sharpness that strikes a balance neither too sharp nor too soft. With most vintage lenses,

I find them overly soft and often facing focus issues, but the SP3 bridges that gap. They’re easy to handle, quick to change like regular photography lenses, and offer interchangeable mounts. My Favorite focal lengths are 32mm, 50mm, and 75mm. Pairing the FX6 with SP3 and a Black Pro-Mist 1/4 filter gave a pleasing glow to bulb highlights while also softening facial imperfections to some extent.

The exterior portions were shot in Karaikal with a very minimal crew, so I chose the Lumix S5IIX with Lumix lenses, allowing me to control focus myself. Looking at the final music video, the FX6 with SP3 lenses and the Lumix setup matched beautifully, giving a clean and cohesive look to the music video.
