The Opera! was my first experience shooting a virtual production and it was a real baptism of fire, testing for weeks right up the Sunday before our Monday morning start. I wanted the images to have an organic feel, less digital. Because we shooting on LF, the Cooke S7 were the right choice after testing many different lenses (I felt they would be).
They have a very smooth roll-off in the highlights and that natural, organic, feel I was looking for. More than 50% of the film was shot on the S7 65mm, my favourite lenses by far. It sees the world as we see it on set, we moved the camera if we need a closer or wider shot and it worked very with the LED screen, handling the backlight that is by definition a feature of shooting on virtual.
