DOP’s Perspective:

This short film was developed under a tight indie budget, which demanded creative problem-solving and efficient use of a minimal gear package without compromising on visual storytelling.

Camera & Lens Choice:

I shot the project on the Sony FX9, a full-frame camera that offers a strong balance of image quality, flexibility, and affordability ideal for independent productions. The FX9’s color science and dynamic range provided a solid foundation for cinematic imagery even in challenging lighting conditions.

For lenses, I chose the Cooke SP3 Prime Kit. These full-frame primes deliver the signature Cooke warmth and subtle vintage character while remaining compact and budget-friendly perfectly suited for indie workflows.

The SP3s offered a beautifully organic rendering of skin tones and background separation, bringing a premium aesthetic to a modestly resourced set.

Lighting Strategy:

Due to the constraints of the project, I worked primarily with a hybrid lighting package of LEDs and HMIs, using their respective qualities to create visual contrast and texture across different scenes.

HMIs were key for daylight exteriors and harder sources, offering intensity and consistency.
LEDs provided versatility on tighter locations, with the ability to shape and modulate light with minimal power needs. This combination allowed me to sculpt distinct visual moods while staying light on gear and power.

Visual Challenge – Day for Night:

One of the most ambitious elements of the shoot was creating convincing Day-for-Night sequences on a small budget. With careful exposure control, color temperature manipulation, and the unique rendering characteristics of the Cooke SP3 lenses, I was able to maintain a cinematic look that carried emotional depth and realism.

The SP3’s smooth highlight roll-off and soft contrast were instrumental in selling the illusion of moonlit environments.
