DOP’s Perspective:

Equipment Choice & Cinematographic Insight
For the Mio Amore Christmas and New Year TVC, my primary objective was to marry a high-energy, kinetic visual style with the warm, inviting “celebration mood” essential for the brand. To achieve this, I chose the DJI Ronin 4D-8K paired with the Cooke SP3 Prime series, specifically focusing on the 35mm and 50mm focal lengths.

The Philosophy of the Rig
The film required a vast amount of movement dynamic tracking shots and complex transitions to mirror the excitement of the holiday season. Traditional gimbal setups often become cumbersome during long shoot days, but the Ronin 4D’s integrated 4-axis stabilization provided a “feather-light” footprint. This allowed me to navigate tight “home” environments and party scenes with the agility of a handheld camera but the stability of a Steadicam.

Why Cooke SP3?
While the Ronin 4D provides the movement, the Cooke SP3s provide the soul. I chose this series because I needed the legendary “Cooke Look” that specific combination of center-frame sharpness and a gentle, creamy fall-off toward the edges. In a commercial for cakes and confectionery, the rendering of textures and skin tones is paramount. The SP3s handled the specular highlights of Christmas lights beautifully, offering organic flaring and a painterly bokeh that felt nostalgic rather than clinical.
