DOP Simon Stolland on the lens of his choice:

It was an honour to be invited by Roy Kimani to shoot my first virtual production piece at Cube Studios in collaboration with Shoot Blue. From my limited knowledge of VP, I was a little sceptical, so it was important for me to choose a camera and lens package that would not only fit creatively, but also one in which I could trust and rely on. The camera body would be an Alexa mini LF and a set of full frame Cooke s8’s.

The aim was to create something stylistic, that still had a strong sense of realism – Something that would have been a logistical nightmare and perhaps, very expensive to shoot practically too. An empty freeway during an ominous thunderstorm was to be the scene and the full frame look paired with the s’8s would capture it beautifully. The highlight roll off when shooting the lenses wide open brought the dreamy surrealism whilst still remaining sharp in the centre connecting our audience with the character. The slightly warmer look to the lenses brought a silky finish to the skin tones whilst still achieving a natural feel. The high speed T1.4 capability also gave us the ability to work mostly from the volume and shoot with less light overall, which made matching light motivation a breeze for myself and gaffer Federico Belloli. Throughout the piece, we worked out way through the set and having that T1.4 capability spread across the entire set meant that we never had to worry about tweaking light levels or compensating with ND when changing lenses – saving us valuable time on set. The S8’s were a dream to work with, not only beautiful but practical too. I have and will continue to trust in Cooke, they never let me down!
