Mickey 17 is a new Sci-fi black comedy film from Director and Producer Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Snowpiercer) released in cinemas today, March 7. The film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Micky7 released in 2022 and stars Robert Pattinson alongside Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Toni Collette.
Mickey Barnes, fed up with his time on Earth, volunteers to be an ‘expendable’ – a disposable clone worker who is regenerated each time he dies. When one of his clones, Mickey 17, is incorrectly assumed dead, this sparks a fight for survival under the rules of the colony in which only one iteration of expendable may exist at a time.

Director of Photography, Darius Khondji, known for his work on Se7en (1995), Uncut Gems (2019) and several other critically acclaimed films, was the creative eye behind Mickey 17. Khondji had used Cooke lenses on previous projects such as Midnight in Paris (2011), Amour (2012) and To Rome with Love (2012). For Mickey 17, Khondji chose the Cooke S7/i series paired with the Arri ALEXA65 to craft the film’s visual language.
Khondji commented “I used the S7 successfully at 95% of the sensor on a 1.85 ratio which was ideal for our movie…their quality still has some resemblance to the old Cookes I loved and used for many years…the glass before the S4s – this is the quality I am always after.”
Khondji found that the S7/i’s had an impressive sharpness that is a result of their high contrast quality, finding the aesthetic easy to adjust to his taste. The cinematographer concluded, “They were the right lenses for this film…they work really well with the Arri65 camera.”
