When Director Hiroo Tanaka invited me to shoot HADO with him, I was excited to hear we’d be working with a Ryukyu dancer dressed in a traditional Okinawan outfit, rich in warm hues. I wanted to enhance this palette with natural tones and a subtle, dreamlike quality while preserving an organic feel in the imagery.
Having previously shot with the S4/i series and always admired the Speed Panchros, I was intrigued by the SP3 series and decided to test them — the team from SEE YOU RENT have been super supportive technically and creatively throughout our production.
The lenses felt like compact versions of the Speed Panchros—retaining their beautiful character while offering a practical form factor. Given the importance of lens size for this project, they seemed like the perfect choice. We needed a camera setup that was lightweight yet well-balanced, allowing us to seamlessly switch between steadicam, sticks, slider, handheld, and gimbal.
The SP3 lenses integrated effortlessly, offering both ease of handling and versatility. I was especially drawn to their vintage yet sharp character, which held up beautifully in both studio and location settings—even wide open. I had a clear vision in mind, and the Cooke SP3 perfectly captured it.
