DOP Jemin Jom Ayyaneth on the lens of his choice:

“Director Anoop Chandran and his agency, Easy Carrot Productions, approached me to shoot two digital video commercials for the ‘NEXT’ campaign of Hyperion by Citizen Watches, India. We finalised two outdoor locations to shoot at over two days, the first was on a yacht and the second was on a golf course. Both elements of the film needed to convey the NEXT campaign concept: ‘Impress yourself, realize, achieve more to get further in life’.

As a long-time admirer of Cooke lenses, ever since my time at LV Prasad film school, I had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to try the new Cooke S8/i FF lenses for a project. And then the Citizen TV commercial shoot was added to my schedule.

Following a script discussion with the Director, I showed him a showreel of a feature film and a TV commercial that I had shot a few years ago on Cooke S4/i lenses. He became as excited as I was to witness the magic of the S8/i FF. On day one – the yacht storyline – I used ARRI Alexa Mini LF, and on day two at the golf course I shot on SONY Venice 2, both with a selection of S8/i FF.

In the Yacht commercial, the lenses were able to capture breathtaking images, surpassing what I witnessed first-hand on this beautiful day. The low angle wide shots of the model, shot on the 35mm, created an exceptional display as the sun generated a direct flare into the lens. The manner in which the lens managed the flare was genuinely a visual treat. The lens was also able to beautifully capture the details of the clouds, highlighting the remarkable capability of Cooke lenses to faithfully reproduce texture and colour. Alexa sensors always shift the highlights to a soft and pleasing zone, yet when combined with the S8, the director of photography triumphs effortlessly. Another significant capture was taken on the 75mm, a fine portrayal of the beauty of the watch dial, featuring the talents’ hands. This particular lens rendered a remarkable spherical bokeh, which became even more pronounced with the subtle trembling effect of water in the background.”
