The Champ

The Champ is a short film about winning, losing and knowing when to keep a straight face.

“The Cooke S8 lenses immediately stood out and had a beauty to them which felt rich and 3 dimensional, in addition to the smooth clarity and organic fall off which epitomises the Cooke Look. They simply are gorgeous and combined with their technical attributes were the perfect fit for this shoot.”Kate Reid\, Director of Photography

DOP Kate Reid BSC on the lens of her choice:

I tested a number of lenses to see how they felt teamed up with the new sensor of the Arri Alexa 35. The Cooke S8 lenses immediately stood out and had a beauty to them which felt rich and 3 dimensional, in addition to the smooth clarity and organic fall off which epitomises the Cooke Look. They simply are gorgeous and combined with their technical attributes were the perfect fit for this shoot.

The shoot was contained to one relatively small room and I wanted a full range of focal lengths that a Cooke series provides in order to give me as much flexibility when I (literally!) had my back against the wall. And the extensive range of the S8 series meant I could forego a zoom lens without feeling compromised.

Additionally the fast speed of the lenses was helpful as I knew our characters would only be a few feet away from the walls of the location and I wanted to have the option to employ a shallow depth of field to give more separation from the background. I shot the film at T2 and enjoyed the gentle fall of the lenses which despite the background being so close to the subject, gave great depth on the mid range focal lengths I was primarily using for this film.

The beautiful aesthetic quality of the new Cooke S8 combined with their strong practical attributes made these lenses ideal. The consistent nature of their size, weight and stop across this extensive set of primes saved me a lot of time on set which is especially critical when a young performer is in the scene.
