„The Future Isn’t What it Used to Be“ is one of five sci-fi shorts in a compilation called “Foresight”, commissioned by Film4 and produced by Fiona Lamptey. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021 and received nominations for Best Cinematography at the Underwire Film Festival and the BSC Cinematography Short Film Award in 2022.

Collaborating closely with director Adeyemi Michael, our aim was to create a desolate world where one could feel the burden of time and solitude. By combining zoom and dolly we were able to achieve the versatility needed for the camera to be actively narrating through the scenes. The zoom would also allow us to create subtle layers of point of view adding to a sense of mystery.
Drawing inspiration from sci-fi classics such as „Aliens,“ „2001: A Space Odyssey,“ and „Solaris,“ we made the deliberate choice to shoot in anamorphic format. I was confident that the Cooke zoom 35-149mm lens provided by Onestop, would deliver three key elements: solid zoom functionality, rendition of soft and rich skin tones, and stunning watercolor-like bokeh.

Shooting a distopian film in the midst of a pandemic was challenging and relevant. Over all, having a solid passionate team, made it possible. Thank you team 🙂
