PatriotWith Patriot, cinematographer Manush Nandan steps into a vast cinematic canvas — a political high-octane thriller that moves across countries, landscapes, and emotional terrains, anchored by a powerhouse cast including Mammootty, Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, and Nayanthara.

Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the film demanded a visual language that feels both contemporary and immediate, yet deeply immersive — placing the audience not as spectators, but as observers inside unfolding reality.

To achieve this, Manush Nandan crafted a visual approach rooted in controlled naturalism.
Pairing the ARRI Alexa 35 with Cooke Panchro/i Classic Full Frame lenses, he softened the inherent digital sharpness of the sensor, bringing in an organic, human texture.

“Alexa 35 can be very crisp. I wanted something more realistic, more organic — something that breathes.”
The Panchros became that bridge — modern in performance, yet classical in emotion.
The film’s narrative design incorporates screens, surveillance, and layered visual information, making the audience feel embedded within systems of control and observation.

“I designed lighting as if it didn’t belong to a set. Everything was motivated from outside — it was ambient.”
Freedom for actors to move naturally

Dynamic staging without restrictions
A sense of uninterrupted realism

With constantly shifting locations and tonalities, maintaining visual continuity was a challenge.

“The color palette kept changing with locations. We stayed true to the ground reality of each mood.”
In this complexity, the Cooke Panchros stood out:
“For all these variations, Cooke optics responded beautifully.”
Working apertures were carefully chosen to balance realism and control:
T2 – T2.8 for interior and character-driven moments
T4 – T5.6 for exterior environments

“While shooting monitor screens, Panchros maintained a clean image — no unwanted reflections or haze.”
Manush Nandan found a special connection with wider focal lengths:

“16mm and 25mm gave a sense of entering a widened world.”
These choices expanded not just space, but psychological immersion.
One of the most striking qualities he discovered:

“The flare is very mild — like an eye blink.”
Not distracting. Not decorative.
Just enough to remind you — this is cinema, not surveillance footage.

With Patriot, Manush Nandan demonstrates that large-scale cinema need not lose intimacy. Through a delicate balance of technology and restraint, he creates a world that feels global in scale, yet immediate in experience.
To observe without interference.
To capture without exaggeration.
To let cinema feel as close to truth as possible — while still being beautifully crafted.
