DOP Julian C Steiner and Director Nikolas Meyberg on their lens and equipment choices
“When Nikolas approached me with this project for the “Mercedes-Benz” brand, he told me the story of our protagonist Han, who gains the insight that the knowledge of his success should not be kept to himself but passed on to the next generation. He is accompanied on his way by his “Mercedes-Benz GLS”.
It was very important to Nikolas to give the project a cinematic expression despite its advertising background. That’s why the famous “Cooke Look” was exactly what we immediately thought of. The unmistakable visual quality is incomparable.
This typical visual warmth was what we wanted to match with the story elements. The many close-ups of our main actor and his companions had a very organic and personal touch thanks to the Cooke lenses.
In addition, we took many outdoor shots and beautiful landscapes in the Sichuan province in China. The anamorphic characteristics of the Cooke‘s allowed me to capture beautiful moments when he becomes one with the surrounding nature.
Especially the 50mm made it easy for me to portray him perfectly, because the background falls off nicely thanks to the low anamorphic depth of field. The exciting bokeh also gave us an unique look.
For the numerous car-to-car scenes with the Russian arm, we used the Cooke Anamorphic/i Zoom, which was a really well fitting part to the visual puzzle. By primarily using the Cooke technology, the story elements could therefore be perfectly combined with the product shots of the Mercedes GLS.”
