DOP Yiannis Manolopoulos on his lens and camera choice:
“ We shot this piece for Nowness with Director David Alexander on a cold winter morning in the grounds around the Pinewood Ballroom. We wanted to make use of the crisp sun and let the natural light filter through the misty cold air atmosphere. The film plays around with the forms of its subjects, not revealing their faces fully while we hear their narration. I employed a lot of silhouetting, as well as intentional flaring from the direct sunlight, to create a graphic aesthetic. The Cooke minis4’s flared beautifully, creating nice spots of blooming and color that blended well with the sun rays filtering through the trees, while at the same time keeping a very good contrast to showcase the silhouetted subjects. Their stop at T2.8, in combination with their lightweight design was a perfect match for this shoot as it was all shot on a steadicam, always moving the camera through the forest grounds, without having to sacrifice anything of the beautiful combination of creaminess and sharpness that the Cooke look offers.”
