Looking ahead at this shoot I knew we were going to be a small team. We had a sense of the overall story, but as with any documentary project you need to be open and ready for whatever comes your way. With that in mind I chose the Sony Fx9 paired with the Cooke s4/i 18, 25, 32, 50, 75, and 100mm lens set. This made for a reliable single-operator system, while still giving the film a defined look. Primes can be tricky when you’re following the action, but I find that it allows me to make more informed decisions when shooting. The compact build of the s4/i’s helped a ton when shooting skating, and the 18mm quickly became my favourite lens.
In all, I’m super proud to be a part of this film. The community that surrounds 4DWN is an infectious force for good. I feel as though the technical decisions we made allowed us to highlight that force with the short time we had, and create something that will inspire people to get involved – or, go skate!
