DOP  Bani Mendy on his camera and lens choices
“This film presented some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced so far, Teddy Nygh, the director; had a grand vision and the references he sent me scared me half to death; mostly due to the scale of the production design and so I knew location choice was vital. I liked the ambition of Teddy’s ideas, so had to start forging a winning balance between cost and likely results. Same problem, different shoot haha. So my first move was to agree that the style, rhythm and the world created in the shows/films he liked were great and then I countered with references that had many of the great aspects and would add our own flavour and uniqueness. Luckily, Teddy and I are long time friends and collaborators, we have developed a short hand and can communicate ideas to one another very well at this point. Two things that became clear early on, were that we would want to use Steadicam for the school scenes and that we would select Cooke’s new anamorphic lenses; the latter wasn’t viable, so we shot with our much loved S4i’S. We chose this set because after having shot with many lenses in various scenarios, telling different stories, yet using mostly the same Arri sensor; we adore the way the S4’s work with faces and skin tone, the 50mm gives lovely proportions and they’re beautifully soft at 2.1; just enough.”
