From real and emotional to quirky and silly, Party Favor takes the audience through a euphoric dream.
“I wanted the Cooke Anamorphic to give it more of that cinematic feel, sharper all around image with a softer edge, a soft more subtle flare, and warmth, in which we wanted in the skin tones, to compliment the cool toned lighting with accents of tungsten.”Jimmy Naples, Director of Photography

Party Favor music video started off as a simple performance piece in a local studio and developed into a cinematic ‘oner’ after the artist was told performance videos are boring. Party Favor is a sad song about love and loss all in one night. We wanted to convey this idea in the video by bringing the audience along for the ride of this push and pull between the artist and her love interest. From real and emotional to quirky and silly, Party Favor takes the audience through a euphoric dream.
DOP Jimmy Naples on the lens of his choice:
When choosing how to bring Party Favor to life visually, a few things came to mind; colorful, scope, and dreamy. In order to achieve this vision and the overall look of a ‘euphoric dream’ I decided the Venice 2 paired with Cooke Anamorphic SF FF/1.8 was the best option. I wanted the Cooke Anamorphic to give it more of that cinematic feel, sharper all around image with a softer edge, a soft more subtle flare, and warmth, in which we wanted in the skin tones, to compliment the cool toned lighting with accents of tungsten. I knew full frame had to be the format because the house was fairly small and we had to trick the audience in believing it was bigger. After the scout and walk through with camera and lens to decide between to 40mm or the 50mm, we chose the 50mm. Since we we were shooting a female, I wanted to play a little more on the longer side of the lens for more beauty but had to be cautious of seeing rigging and lighting in frame. With a combination of the Venice 2 and the Cooke Anamorphic SF FF, we were able to capture that euphoric dream that the Party Favor music video became. Being able to shoot in full frame made our idea much more achievable because of the tight spaces and the scope in which the Venice 2 sensor can cover.
The idea of a one shot is always exciting but can sometimes be intimating. We knew it was right for this project because the song is about love and loss, all in one night, and we wanted to keep the viewer engaged in it. Our steadicam operator, Alex Beswick, did a wonderful job moving our audience through this story with Maddie as she experiences love and loss and we take you through the push and pull of this relationship. The image we see on screen isn’t possible without all my crew; from the 1st AC keeping it sharp to the gaffer hitting all the lighting cues and the key grip for gridding out the ceiling to make all the lighting possible. Thanks again for watching the Party Favor music video!
