DOP’s Perspective:
Creative Direction:
The creative direction for this collaboration with Atlys Visa called for a warm, inviting aesthetic that connects emotionally with the audience while maintaining a refined, cinematic look.
Camera & Format:
The project was shot on the ARRI Alexa Mini LF, using the Open Gate sensor mode to take full advantage of the large-format sensor’s shallow depth of field and exceptional tonal range. This choice helped achieve an immersive, high-end visual language that feels both intimate and expansive.
Lens Choice:
I paired the camera with Cooke S7/i Primes, celebrated for their gentle focus roll-off, creamy highlights, and signature warmth. These lenses brought the distinctive Cooke Look™, enhancing the film’s emotional tone with soft, dimensional imagery and a natural, human-centric atmosphere.
Lighting Approach:
To reinforce the warmth and tactile realism of the visuals, I chose an all-tungsten lighting setup, intentionally avoiding LEDs to maintain the organic falloff and true-to-life color fidelity that incandescent light provides.
Key Fixtures:
• Dino 12 Bank: Served as the primary soft source, delivering beautifully diffused key light with a rich, warm tone.
• ARRI T12 Fresnel’s: Used for sculpting harder accents and adding depth, especially in wider compositions.
This all-tungsten approach imbued the images with a classic cinematic character authentic skin tone, soft highlights, and a nostalgic warmth perfectly aligned with Atlys Visa’s emotional brand message.
