DOP Robert Shacklady on the production and his camera and lens choice:
“The ART film is one of four (ART, FASHION, SPORT & MUSIC). Each film depicting certain characteristics of different car models. Director, Glen Milner came up with the concept of projection mapping on a car. Because of time / budget we we not able to test, which was a shame but something I had to deal with. Also because the complexity of the projection mapping set up, I had very little time to shoot the piece and had to make decisions quickly and efficiently.
The projection mapping projectors had a set light output and colour temperature of 5,600 Deg K, using my light meter I was able to adjust my set lights to achieve the correct balance.
I shot with Alexa camera and chose Cooke S4 lenses because of their classic look. I didn’t want the car lines and highlights to be too sharp or clinical. I had to choose a set of lenses that I could also shoot fashion models (FASHION spot) as well as doing a great job on the vehicle’s lines, edges and curves (probably a bit like a fashion model) . The S4’s gave a smooth but still contrasty image and proved to be the best choice.”
