This campaign was an important one for Titleist, as it marked both the release of the new 2025 Pro V1 golf ball and the 25th anniversary of the Pro V1’s introduction. Director Joseph Hafera expressed a desire to create dreamlike visuals extraordinary in scale, while always staying true to the core golfer. Motion State EPs Corey and Amber Koniniec found the perfect location at Gamble Sands Golf Course in Brewster, Washington. Situated atop a bluff overlooking the Columbia River, the course offered an almost otherworldly backdrop.

We aimed to capture the stunning topography of the course using a full-frame sensor camera and anamorphic lenses. After careful consideration, we chose the Sony Venice 2, for its 8.6K resolution & the height of its 3:2 sensor, paired with the Cooke Anamorphic/i FF+ Special Flare lenses. Combining the Cooke Anamorphics with the Sony Venice 2 renders a really special looking image, almost painterly in quality. The chromatic aberrations are pleasant and non-distracting, and most importantly, the lenses resolve beautifully even when shot wide open. They aren’t susceptible to milking out when hit with strong backlight and have a really interesting flare structure that isn’t overbearing.

The 32mm lens played a key role in this shoot. We don’t often use such a wide focal length, but the landscape’s grandeur made it essential. Unlike most wide anamorphic focal lengths the Cooke’s don’t show any distortion or bending on the edges of the frame. Additionally, the 85mm Macro lens proved invaluable for tight hero shots of the golf ball and intimate, handheld close-ups of our golf talent.

Joseph Hafera and I have been using Cooke Anamorphic/i FF+ lenses for Titleist commercials for the past four years, and they’ve consistently helped the work stand out. Over the years we’ve tested numerous anamorphic lenses, but always end up returning to the Cookes. No other anamorphic lens consistently provides looks that surpass what we see in our imagination.
